The Best Resorts in the World

The Best Resorts in the World

Moon Palace, Cancun Mexico

What makes a vacation great? There are a lot of factors that can make your trip enjoyable. The length of your stay. This will vary from person to person. According to research published in the Journal of Happiness Studies, An eight-day vacation is the ideal length of time to spend away from home. According to the researchers, a vacationer will experience an increase in happiness over the first several days of their trip, with the feeling reaching its zenith on the eighth day. For me, five to seven days work well. Eventually, I start yearning for home. I love to travel but I love to be in my house.

The type of vacation is essential, too. To name a few, city, beach, mountain, and resort are very popular. There are also road trips, hiking trips and cruises. You don't have to only do one type of vacation and a change-up can be refreshing.

I am the type of traveler who enjoys staying on nice resorts at the beach. There are those who like to be in the city near all of the activity and I've done these types, too, but there is nothing like luxury resorts with all of the activity and access to great food and drinks.

Many are high-end, low-impact eco-resorts that place sustainability and conservation at the forefront of their operations. While others pamper guests in luxury beach villas on some of the world's most beautiful islands, from over-the-water bungalows on one of Fiji's most beautiful islands to eco-chic nature resorts in Indonesia, the majority of them are located in the Pacific. Some of the resorts are among the most expensive in the world, while others provide excellent value — with everything, including activities, included in the price.

Many of these resorts will make it onto most people's bucket lists. Any will give you an experience that will be worth remembering for the rest of your life.

Here is a list of some of the best resorts in the world.

Nihi Sumba Island, Indonesia

Nihi Sumba Island, Indonesia
Image: nihi.com

Known for being environmentally conscious and breathtakingly beautiful, Nihi Sumba Island, a former surfing haven, is consistently ranked among the world's best beach destinations. It presides over a wild and pristine palm-fringed stretch of coastline on the remote Indonesian island of Sumba, which is about an hour's flight from the popular tourist destination of Bali.

When you consider that the resort's philosophy is "The Edge of Wildness," it's a fitting location. Because of the resort's location within a nature reserve, it has more than 2.5 kilometers of white-sand beach that extends beneath the cliffs below and offers excellent opportunities for surfing, fishing, and snorkeling, among other activities. There are no televisions here; instead, you'll find cool ocean breezes, island adventures, warm and friendly staff, and breathtaking ocean views.

Each of the 33 air-conditioned villas captures the essence of this tropical hideaway, with soaring thatched ceilings that peek out from among the palms and sweeping ocean views from every room. One- to five-bedroom configurations are available, all of which include amenities such as spacious living rooms, private infinity plunge pools, outdoor showers, and impeccable butler service, among other things. Families can reserve a three-story treehouse that is delightfully eccentric.

Even if you can't tear yourself away from your villa and beach, which boasts world-class surfing, diving, and fishing, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. You can go horseback riding on the beach (the resort has an equestrian center), go mountain biking, go on a Land Rover safari, visit a chocolate factory, or simply relax at the beach club and swimming pool.

Spa Safaris offer the ultimate in pampering, with multiple treatments and healthy meals included in the price of your ticket. Yoga is also available for free every day in a pavilion with a view of the sea.

All meals, snacks, and some beverages, as well as some activities, are included in the rates. Children are welcome, and a portion of the proceeds from your stay will be donated to the Sumba Foundation's community projects, which include providing fresh water, medical care, and communal farms for local villages, allowing you to live in luxury while also doing good for the world around you.

The Brando, Tahiti

The Brando
The Brando Tahiti

For those looking for a tropical paradise in Tahiti that is environmentally conscious and low-impact, The Brando is the resort for you. This carbon-neutral resort is located on a pristine private island surrounded by a three-mile lagoon and offers the ultimate in laid-back luxury and relaxation.

It was founded by film legend Marlon Brando to preserve the island's beauty and biodiversity while also serving as a model of sustainability — solar power, seawater air-conditioning systems, and other renewable energy technologies are used to power the entire resort.

It should come as no surprise that nature lovers will be in heaven here. Reefs abound in the lagoon, birds swarm to the shorelines, whale migration routes cross the lagoon, and sea turtle nesting sites dot the pristine white sand beaches.

The thatched villas, which are set back from the beach and surrounded by pandanus and palms, are unobtrusively beautiful. Thatch, stone, and wood are all used as building materials, and modern furnishings and fixtures blend seamlessly with recycled and local building materials.

Private plunge pools, outdoor bathtubs, and media rooms with TVs and Wi-Fi are all available in the villas. Larger families will appreciate the additional space provided by the three-bedroom villa, which includes a kitchen and dining area. All of the villas are equipped with bicycles, allowing you to explore the island entirely by pedal power.

The cuisine, which incorporates fresh produce from the island's organic gardens and incorporates French, Polynesian, and East-meets-West styles, is delectable. Local seafood is prominent on the menu, and the fluffy, flaky breakfast croissants are a favorite among the patrons. There are also vegan options available.

It goes without saying that activities revolve around water, and the resort provides everything you need to paddleboard, snorkel, dive, and kayak in the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. If you're interested in learning more about the ecology and conservation of the island, you can pay a visit to the eco-station and speak with the researchers.

In addition, the resort offers lectures on Polynesian culture and history. Lagoon School keeps the little ones occupied, while tennis, deep-sea fishing, dancing, and fitness classes are available for those who prefer to be more active.

Although all-inclusive rates are not required, this full-board plan includes coverage for all island activities as well as holistic treatments at the soulful resort's spa.

You'll also have access to the Vista Bar, which is located right on the beach, so you'll never be more than a few steps away from a refreshing cocktail.
