Mount Teide National Park, located on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, is home to the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano, which, at 3,718 meters above sea level, is the highest point on Spanish soil. This volcanic edifice, which rises 7,500 meters above sea level and is situated in a magnificent landscape, is recognized as the world's third-tallest volcanic structure. This is made possible by atmospheric conditions that provide continually shifting textures and tones in the terrain as well as a "sea of clouds" that forms an aesthetically pleasing backdrop to the mountain. Criterion (vii): Tenerife's Mount Teide dominates a dramatic volcanic landscape highlighted by the steep Las Caadas escarpment and a core volcano that is the third tallest volcanic structure on the planet. An exceptional suite of landforms exists within this environment, each of which reveals distinct stages of the creation and remodeling of the volcanic complex and draws attention to the region's exceptional geodiversity. Because of the continually shifting textures and tones in the terrain, as well as the presence of a cloud sea that offers a visually striking backdrop to the mountain, the visual impact is amplified even further.
(viii) Teide National Park is an exceptional example of an extremely old, slow-moving, geologically complex, and mature volcanic system due to its age, slow movement, geological complexity, and maturity. As a source of diverse evidence of the geological processes that have shaped the history of oceanic islands, it is of global significance, and its values complement those of other volcanic properties already on the World Heritage List, such as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It contains a diversified and easily accessible collection of volcanic features and landscapes within a very small geographical area. Located in the heart of a major international research center, the area has a long history of influence on geology and geomorphology, particularly through the work of scientists such as von Humboldt, von Buch, and Lyell, who have helped to establish Mount Teide as a significant site in the history of volcanology.
There is a six-year management plan in place, which will be renewed in 2008. The property is effectively managed and resourced, and there is a well-developed budget. In addition to being surrounded by a buffer zone, the property enjoys the same level of legal protection as other national parks in Spain. The management of tourism, the possible effects of climate change, and the effective coordination of management responsibilities between national and regional levels of government are all important management concerns that must be addressed.
